Historical Thinking Skills: Sourcing

Time Period: 1867-1914

This assessment provides insight into student’s thinking when engaging in the sourcing of a historical document. When historians analyze a document, they first “Read Around The Document”, attending to the meta data of the source. By noting the author, date, type, and purpose of the source, we can better understand the strengths and limitations of the source as historical evidence, and use this information to help us contextualize information that we encounter in the source’s actual contents.
